Classic Tuna Melt

Time: 20 minutes

Feeds: 1 person

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1 can tuna, drained
  • 1/4 cup mayo, plus more for the outside of the bread
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp white pepper
  • 1/8 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp dried dill
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • Chips, sliced apple or another fruit, to serve on the side

Directions: Start with mixing up your tuna salad. In a bowl, add the tuna and flake apart to your liking. Season with salt, white pepper, garlic powder, and dill and mix together. Add your mayo and stir to combine. Make the tuna salad to your liking by adding more mayo if necessary. You’ll want to be careful to not add too much and make it too loose and runny on the sandwich.

Now it’s time to assemble the sandwich. Have a small skillet (nonstick or stainless steel) ready to go on the stove but not warming at all. Slather one side of one of the pieces of bread with mayo and place mayo side down in the skillet. Add a slice of American cheese and then top with your tuna salad. Next, add your other slice of American cheese and top with the other slice of bread. You’ll want to add mayo to the outside of this piece of bread as well.

Heat the skillet over medium-low heat keeping a close eye on the sandwich while it’s toasting. It’s better to flip more often than to let it go for too long and come out with a burnt sandwich. Once the sandwich is toasted to your liking and the cheese is melted, remove from the pan and place on a plate to cool. Serve with chips or fruit to complete the perfect lunch!

Notes: I am a sucker for a tuna melt but I also love to make it with other canned proteins like canned chicken or canned salmon. Sometimes I’ll add capers to the mix when making a salmon melt or will add buffalo sauce to the chicken salad when going in that direction. You’re welcome to make the salad base your own based on your preferences like adding celery or green onion or different flavors. The key to making a good melt is to stay basic with the canned protein that you’re using. No need to splurge on the fancy oil packed tuna for something like this.
