Smash Burgers

Time: 30 minutes

Feeds: 2 people

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • Diamond Crystal Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • White onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 potato buns, toasted
  • Ketchup, mustard, mayo, or any other condiments you might want on the burger
  • Chips or fruit, to serve on the side

Directions: Take your ground beef and separate it into four 2 oz balls. Set aside until you’re ready to cook these. Next, prep your buns how you’d like them. I like to melt or soften some butter with a little salt, pepper, and garlic powder mixed in and then I will put them under the broiler in my oven until they’re toasted how I want them. You can also use plain butter or toast them dry either under the broiler or on the surface where you’re going to cook your smash burgers. I recommend using an electric griddle or a propane flattop if you can but this can absolutely be done in a pan as well.

Preheat your cooking surface to about 350. Place the beef balls on the surface and use a burger press with a piece of parchment between to flatten them out. Once flattened to be nice and thin, season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder and leave them alone until you see a nice crust forming along the edges. Flip the burger and immediately top with the cheese to get it melted. This is a really quick cook since the burgers should be really thin. Stack two patties on top of each other and then add to a bun, repeating with the other two patties and other bun. Top with sliced white onion and any condiments you’d like to have. Honestly, they’re great on their own with no condiments as well if you get the crust really nice and season them properly.

Serve with fruit or chips on the side and enjoy!
